The Street Outreach program builds upon the relationships created with young people through the HYPE program.
The vision for the program is that each Friday, a youth outreach van with a youth worker and team of 2 - 3 volunteers, snacks, games and resources, will go out to the local community as a positive presence, interacting with youth and forming relationships.
The youth worker's purpose will be to identify at risk young people, guide and assist with education, welfare, referrals and more whilst the volunteers interact with the young people and hand out snacks and other resources.
The volunteers purpose is to be present with the young people and engage with them in positive conversation.
A similar program has run in the past as a part of another organisation with the support of the local police in the Mt Druitt area, with successful results, whereby crime rates reduced in the area . Additionally, assistance and guidance provided by the youth worker present resulted in enrolling young people in TAFE courses, putting homeless people in touch with local shelters, and more. Unfortunately, this program is no longer running with this other organisation and we would like to see it re-start, particularly in Western Sydney.
We plan on commencing this service in 2018, on Friday evenings in Western Sydney area, and expanding it's locations as the HYPE program expands.
